Code of Ethics

Looking through the NAEYC (National Association for the Education of Young Children) and DEC's (Division of Early Childhood) code of ethics, there were three that stuck out to me personally and professionally.  These three are as follows,

From the DEC-
"We shall demonstrate in our behavior and language respect and appreciation for the unique value and human potential of each child."
What I find great about this ideal is that they used the words human potential and reminded us all that simple yet powerful fact that is the right of all human beings.

From the NAEYC-
"To support co-workers in meeting their professional needs and in their professional development."
This is great because we all have room to grow and recreate ourselves, and we all need a little help getting there.

"To promote knowledge and understanding of young children and their needs.  To work toward greater societal acknowledgment of children's rights and greater social acceptance of responsibility for the well-being of all children."
I appreciate the goal here.  To heighten society's awareness of the issues that involve children.  But to also make society aware of the huge part they can play.

  1. Tina-I have to agree with you about the simple word human. Sometimes, I think it is easy at times for all of us to forget that these little people running around are "humans". We must strive to respect all children even the ones that may seems like "little monsters". The truth is, they are probably the ones that need our respect and appreciation the most.

  2. Each of the statements you chose from the Code of Ethics of each organization resonates with the emphasis of our course discussions.

  3. Tina,

I agree with all three of the ideals you chose as well as your comments toward them. I chose three ideals to discuss that were along the same lines as yours. We must have the same beliefs about education!

  4. Hi Tina- I like your choice of ideals from each set of codes of ethics. It is important to remember that those we serve are also our peers, fellow "humans" and they have the same rights as all of us. It is true that all of us need some help and support on the way!

  5. Tina, thank you for choosing your very first point. Many times I believe that those who do not highly favor the ECE field forget that our little ones are just like us "humans". The ideals, values, and educational opportunities that we instill in them are essential to their development as children and later in life. Our precious jewels are entitled to the same rights as we are; they just need "us" to speak up for them. Again thank you for sharing!!!

  6. I appreciated all of the ideals you chose to share; especially the third one. I really like the emphasis that we must "...work toward greater societal acknowledgment of children's rights and greater social acceptance of responsibility for the well-being of all children." It is certainly true that we must work towards greater responsibility for our children's well-being. Parents, educators, and the community must take responsibility for our children in order to lesson problems later into adulthood.

  8. Tina,
I have really enjoyed getting to know you professionally through this course. You have had some great insights into the early childhood field that have expanded my own way of thinking. I especially remember early on in the course when you shared how much you do with your own young child by specifically teaching her three new things each week. I think this definitely exemplifies how serious you take both motherhood and your career by merging the two to benefit your own child. Thank you so much for sharing this semester and I look forward to working with you in the future.
